The Counter-Space Collective

Reading for liberation. Gathering for change.

The Counter-Space Collective is a community-centered book and dialogue circle created to uplift women of color and their allies through shared reading, reflection, and relationship-building. Rooted in the tradition of counter-spaces and freedom schools, we gather to create a refuge for learning, healing, and collective growth.

Each cycle, we engage with a book, excerpt, or selected readings that center the wisdom, lived experiences, and leadership of women of color. Our gatherings, held a few times each year, are facilitated spaces for guided discussion, deep listening, community connection, and the intentional building of beloved community.

Grounded in trauma-informed and care-centered practices, our sessions honor both the big and small ways we resist harmful systems, disrupt inherited patterns, and imagine more just and joyful futures. This is a space to bring your full self — your questions, your stories, your exhaustion, your hope — and to be held in community.

Inspired by the work of bell hooks and traditions of liberatory education, The Counter-Space Collective is also a place to share resources, support one another, build networks of care, and stay connected to what is happening in our local community. We celebrate diverse perspectives, identities, spiritual traditions, and lived experiences, and we welcome people of all faiths and of no faith.

Here, reading is an act of resistance. Gathering is an act of care.

This first round of The Counter-Space Collective will center Communion by bell hooks as a way to ground our community in love, care, healing, and collective belonging. These gatherings are designed to be a counter-space for women who are often at the center of care for others, creating space to reconnect with themselves, with each other, and with traditions of liberatory love and community.
This is not just a book club — it is a space for rest, reflection, connection, and building beloved community.
